Eye exams are vital for ensuring our vision is in good shape and for tracking changes in our eyesight. However, many people may not realize that these exams can reveal far more than just the need for glasses or contacts. Your eyes are windows to your overall health, and an eye exam can often detect systemic diseases and conditions before other symptoms become apparent. Here are some health problems that an optometrist can detect during an eye exam.

Diabetes

An eye doctor might be the first to spot signs of diabetes. During an eye exam, tiny blood vessels in the retina are examined. Damage to these vessels, or diabetic retinopathy, can be an early sign of diabetes.

High Blood Pressure

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) can also affect the blood vessels in your eyes. A condition known as hypertensive retinopathy can occur when high blood pressure causes the blood vessels in the retina to narrow, leak, or swell.

High Cholesterol

If your eye doctor notices yellowish plaques within the retinal arteries or a blue ring around your cornea, it could indicate high cholesterol. Sometimes, small lumps of cholesterol or other fats can also be visible on the eyelids.

Autoimmune Disorders

Certain autoimmune disorders, like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, can cause eye inflammation, dry eyes, and light sensitivity. These symptoms can be spotted during a comprehensive eye exam.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Multiple sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as herpes, HIV, and gonorrhea, affect layers of your eye. Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of your eye, can also occur from STDs. During an eye exam, your optometrist can detect these and find the best treatment.

Cancer

Eye exams can sometimes reveal signs of cancer. For example, an irregular pupil could be a sign of ocular melanoma, while droopy eyelids and unequal pupils can point to a neck or brain tumor.
