Vaccines & Immunizations

Vaccinations and immunizations are important not only for your own health but preventing the spread of disease throughout the community. Below, we provide information about the shingles vaccine but this is only one of the many vaccines to which ATRIO Health Plan members have access to.

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, in their lifetime. There are an estimated 1 million cases of shingles each year in this country. Anyone who has recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles; even children can get shingles. However, the risk of shingles increases as you get older. About half of all cases occur in men and women aged 60 years or older.

Getting vaccinated is the only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain from post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). The CDC recommends people aged 60 years and older get one dose of shingles vaccine. The shingles vaccine is available at pharmacies and doctor's offices. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have questions about the shingles vaccine.
