As we continue to get older, it's normal to experience distressing emotions. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that you can look after your mental and emotional health during your golden years.

Get Enough Sleep

Whether you just want to watch one more episode of your favorite show or you get caught up in spending time with your loved ones—we often sacrifice our sleep to do other activities. Although you may feel a bit groggy the next morning, skipping out on sleep negatively impacts your mental health.

Although it was previously believed that sleep issues were a result of mental illness, the relationship between sleep and mental health are actually bidirectional. This means that sleep deprivation can be both a cause and consequence of mental health disorders.

Research has shown that when you get quality rest, your brain is better able to process emotional information. To help alleviate the symptoms associated with mental health issues, and even prevent the development of mental health problems, aim to get the recommended 7-9 hours of quality rest each night.

Lead an Active Lifestyle

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is recommended that adults fit in at least 2.5 hours (150minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity into their schedule each week. While staying active is known to support your physical health in many ways, it also helps to support your mental health.

Anxiety and depression are two of the most prevalent forms of mental health disorders for adults in the United States. By participating in regular physical activity, you can help to ease the symptoms of these distressing emotions. It also effectively reduces the risk of developing mental health issues.

Keep a Journal

While you may have kept a journal or a diary in your younger years to hold your deepest secrets, it’s a good idea to continue this into your adulthood. Writing down your thoughts and feelings not only helps to be an excellent way to manage your stress levels, but it also helps to boost your mood and improve your ability to regulate your emotions.
