Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program
Effective April 1, 2018, ATRIO Medicare Members at risk for type 2 diabetes have access to the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) as a preventive service.
MDPP is a lifestyle change program that can help you lose weight, adopt healthy habits and reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The best part? It’s available at no cost to members that qualify.
The following elements are included to help you succeed:
- A focus on healthier food choices and increased activity levels

16 weekly lessons over the span of six months, followed by monthly maintenance sessions
- interactions with a lifestyle health coach
- Small group, in-person classes for encouragement and support
Medicare criteria for eligibility are:
- Enrollment in Medicare Part B

Blood value:
- Fasting plasma glucose of 110-125 mg/dL, or
- A1C value between 5.7-6.4, or
- Oral glucose tolerance test between 140 - 199 mg/dL
- BMI greater than 25 (or if Asian, greater than 23)
- No diagnosis of end-stage renal disease, type 1 or type 2 diabetes; previous gestational diabetes is not an exclusion to participation
